AS COVID-19 PASSES 12MILLION WITH OVER 500,000 DEATHS WORLDWIDE, MORE EVIDENCE EMERGE CONCERNING ITS SPREAD

As the world continues its struggle in search for treatment and possible preventive regimen for SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), the number of confirmed cases continues to rise.

In the forefront of the pandemic is the United States of America which accounts for the highest number of cases and deaths From the disease

Globally, as of 2:48pm CEST, 9 July 2020, there have been 11,874,226 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 545,481 deaths, reported to WHO.

From the number of confirmed cases reported to the WHO according to the regions of the world, the Americas accounts for more than half of cases, followed by Europe with less than 2/3rd, the least been the Western Pacific regions

The manner and means of spread of SARS-CoV-2(COVID-19)

Prevailing evidence suggests that transmission of SARS-CoV-2(COVID-19) occurs primarily between people through direct, indirect, or close contact with infected people through infected secretions such as saliva and respiratory secretions, or through their respiratory droplets, which are expelled when an infected person coughs, sneezes, talks or sings.

However, new WHO report as released today suggest that airborne transmission of the virus can occur in health care settings where specific medical procedures, called aerosol generating procedures, generate very small droplets called aerosols.

The report further says that some outbreak reports related to indoor crowded spaces have suggested the possibility of aerosol transmission, combined with droplet transmission, for example, during choir practice, in restaurants or in fitness classes

The report also notes that there are still many unanswered questions around airborne transmission and how exactly the virus spreads.
